Masonis Shepard, the war hero of Elysium, a Renegade Vanguard who will get the job done, no matter the cost. He was born on Earth, and he grew up on the streets until he was old enough to enlist with the Alliance.

He fought off Saren, Sovereign and the geth, maintaining the support of each and every one of his squadmates. His biggest loss was Ashley Williams on Virmire, where she died assisting Captain Kirrahe and his STG unit during the attack on Saren's cloning facility. During the defense of the Citadel from Sovereign, he sacrificed the council instead of the human fleets assaulting Sovereign itself. He knew that, if the Reapers were to return, the Council, which was the least of help during his pursuit of Saren, was irredeemably obsolete and completely replaceable. When given the option of choosing humanity's new position in the Council, Udina was his first pick.

After being killed by the Collectors and spaced within the wreckage of the Normandy SR-1, Masonis teamed up with his elusive (or illusive) saviors in Cerberus. In the newly built Normandy SR-2, Masonis recruited fighters of all shapes and sizes during his short operation in the Terminus. He met with old and trusted companions, and he moved on from many others which brought nothing but struggle at the time. Masonis even dabbled with a small affair with his previous savior, Operative Miranda Lawson, before deciding that it was not worth giving up his nerve before his coming task. While working to build a team and a formidable frigate before heading through the Omega-4 relay, Masonis aided in other problems across the galaxy which would shape the stories of individuals and communities alike. He settled old grudges, aided with closure and espionage, halted the cruelty of science, and brought an end to the life-threatening pursuit of a friend, as well as the tyrannical reign of a formidable broker.

Although Masonis's mission to destroy the Collectors was a perfect success, he knew that the real threat was still lingering over the galaxy. Harbinger, the true master of the Prothean husks known to all as the Collectors, still threatened the return of the Reapers. After cutting ties with Cerberus and hijacking his new vessel, Admiral Hackett of the Alliance Fifth Fleet urged the Commander to assist in a covert operation which would take a surprising turn. In a whim of chance and cunning, Masonis successfully delayed the oncoming Reaper invasion with mere minutes, but at a cost. The Bahak System, home to hundreds of thousands of primarily Batarian people, was destroyed after the destruction of the Alpha Relay.

Hated by the Batarians with new blood, and now a convict still running free, Masonis had a poor standing with the galaxy who had avoided his notions after his revival by Cerberus. The Normandy's crew was disbanded and sent their separate ways, the vessel was seized by the Alliance, and Masonis was taken into Alliance custody for six months, awaiting the inevitable.
