Ewan Cousland, second son of Bryce and Eleanor Cousland, was saved by Warden-Commander Duncan the night Arl Rendon Howe betrayed and murdered his whole family and stole Highever for himself out of jealousy and selfishness. Though Ewan swore, before his dying parents and his saviour, that he would devote his life to fighting against darkspawn and fend off the Blight that was now menacing Ferelden, he could never forget the scent of blood and death, and the cries of the innocent killed by Howe's soldiers. Nor could he ever forget, though he would try to repress it with all his might, his strong thirst for vengeance.
Once Ewan and Duncan reached the Korcari Wilds, where King Cailan Theirin and Teyrn Loghain Mac Tir were leading the Ferelden army, he truly realised that his life was about to take a turn. Upon meeting the former, he felt a strong sense of sympathy, the sort of sympathy one feels towards a younger sibling, too eager to fight and whose focus is lost too easily, but whose enthusiasm is like a shining light amidst the night. Upon meeting the latter, he felt a sense of respect, emphasised by Loghain's unyielding attitude and strong gaze. However, none of them would be Ewan's most fateful encounter that day ...
